Thể giả định (Subjunctive Mood) là gì?
Thể giả định (subjunctive mood) là cấu trúc ngữ pháp dùng sau các động từ chỉ yêu cầu, đề nghị, ra lệnh (suggest, recommend, insist, demand, require...). Điểm đặc biệt: động từ sau that luôn ở dạng nguyên thể (bare infinitive), bất kể chủ ngữ là gì.
Trong TOEIC Part 5, đây là dạng bẫy rất hiệu quả vì thí sinh thường chia động từ theo chủ ngữ (thói quen), trong khi đáp án đúng là V-bare (không chia).
Quy tắc chính: V + that + S + V-bare
Các động từ yêu cầu subjunctive

TRỌNG TÂM: Dù chủ ngữ là he/she/it (ngôi 3 số ít), động từ vẫn ở dạng nguyên thể — KHÔNG thêm "s/es"!
Ví dụ phân tích chi tiết
Câu sai (bẫy TOEIC):
- "The manager suggested that he attends the workshop." ❌ (thêm s → SAI)
- "The manager suggested that he attended the workshop." ❌ (quá khứ → SAI)
- "The manager suggested that he should attend the workshop." (chấp nhận nhưng KHÔNG phải subjunctive chuẩn)
Câu đúng:
- "The manager suggested that he attend the workshop." ✓ (V-bare → ĐÚNG!)
Subjunctive với tính từ + that
Subjunctive cũng dùng sau cấu trúc It is + tính từ + that + S + V-bare.

BẪY TOEIC: "It is necessary that he be present." — dùng be (KHÔNG PHẢI is/are/was).
Subjunctive phủ định
Phủ định subjunctive: S + not + V-bare (KHÔNG dùng doesn't/didn't).
Ví dụ TOEIC:
- "The policy requires that employees not use personal devices during meetings." ✓
- "The policy requires that employees don't use personal devices." ❌ (SAI!)
- "She suggested that he not be late for the presentation." ✓
Subjunctive bị động
Dạng bị động subjunctive: S + be + V3 (past participle).
Ví dụ TOEIC:
- "The board recommended that the project be completed within six months."
- "It is essential that all documents be submitted electronically."
- "They demanded that the issue be resolved immediately."

Mẹo nhận biết nhanh trong TOEIC
- Thấy suggest/recommend/insist/demand/require → tìm that → động từ sau = V-bare
- Thấy It is essential/important/necessary → tìm that → V-bare
- Đáp án có "s/es" ở cuối (attends, submits) → loại ngay nếu trước đó có suggest/recommend
- Đáp án là "be" (không phải is/are/was) → đúng nếu trong cấu trúc subjunctive
Câu hỏi thường gặp
"Should" có dùng thay subjunctive được không?
Trong tiếng Anh British, should + V thường được dùng thay subjunctive: "He suggested that she should attend." Tuy nhiên, trong TOEIC (theo chuẩn American English), subjunctive V-bare là đáp án ưu tiên. Nếu đề cho cả hai, chọn V-bare.
Tại sao subjunctive dùng "be" mà không dùng "is"?
Vì subjunctive là dạng nguyên thể — không chia theo ngôi. "Be" là nguyên thể của is/am/are. Trong cấu trúc "It is necessary that he be present", "be" không phải lỗi sai — đây là ngữ pháp chuẩn subjunctive.
Subjunctive có khó gặp trong TOEIC thực tế không?
Subjunctive xuất hiện trung bình 1-2 câu mỗi đề TOEIC, thường ở mức 600-900 điểm. Đây là dạng câu hỏi "phân loại" — nếu nắm vững, bạn chọn đúng trong 10 giây. Nếu không biết, rất dễ chọn sai vì bẫy chia động từ theo thói quen.
