Phrasal verbs (cụm động từ) là một trong những dạng từ vựng khó nhất đối với người học tiếng Anh. Trong TOEIC, phrasal verbs xuất hiện ở cả Part 5 (chọn phrasal verb đúng), Part 6 (điền vào đoạn văn) và Part 7 (đọc hiểu — cần hiểu nghĩa để trả lời).
Đặc điểm: nghĩa của phrasal verb thường khác hoàn toàn nghĩa từng từ riêng lẻ. Ví dụ: "put off" = hoãn lại (không phải "đặt ra ngoài").

Phrasal verbs có quan trọng trong TOEIC không?
Rất quan trọng. Phrasal verbs xuất hiện ở cả 3 phần đọc (Part 5, 6, 7). Part 5 hay hỏi trực tiếp: chọn phrasal verb đúng. Part 7 cần hiểu phrasal verb để hiểu đoạn văn. Mỗi đề TOEIC có khoảng 3-5 câu liên quan đến phrasal verbs.
Có bao nhiêu phrasal verbs trong tiếng Anh?
Hàng nghìn. Nhưng trong TOEIC, ETS lặp đi lặp lại khoảng 40-60 phrasal verbs phổ biến. Học 40 phrasal verbs trong bài này là đủ để xử lý phần lớn câu hỏi TOEIC.
Có quy tắc nào để đoán nghĩa phrasal verb không?
Không có quy tắc chắc chắn, nhưng có xu hướng: "out" thường gợi ý hoàn thành (carry out, sort out, figure out, fill out); "up" thường gợi ý bắt đầu hoặc tăng (set up, sign up, bring up, scale up); "off" thường gợi ý dừng hoặc huỷ (put off, call off, lay off). Tuy nhiên, nhiều ngoại lệ nên tốt nhất là thuộc lòng.
