Đảo ngữ (Inversion) trong TOEIC: Not only, Hardly, Seldom, Never

Đảo ngữ là gì?

Đảo ngữ (Inversion) là cấu trúc đổi vị trí chủ ngữ và trợ động từ — trợ động từ đứng trước chủ ngữ, giống cấu trúc câu hỏi nhưng là câu khẳng định. Trong TOEIC Part 5, đảo ngữ thường xuất hiện 1 câu/đề ở mức khó trung bình-cao.

Cấu trúc: Trạng từ phủ định + trợ động từ + S + V chính

Ví dụ:

• Bình thường: "The company has never experienced such rapid growth."
• Đảo ngữ: "Never has the company experienced such rapid growth."

Nhóm 1: Đảo ngữ với trạng từ phủ định

1. Never / Never before

Cấu trúc: Never (before) + aux + S + V

• "Never has the company received so many complaints."
• "Never before had they seen such a dramatic increase in sales."

2. Rarely / Seldom

Cấu trúc: Rarely/Seldom + aux + S + V

• "Rarely does the manager miss a deadline."
• "Seldom has the committee rejected a proposal outright."

3. Hardly / Scarcely / Barely

Cấu trúc: Hardly/Scarcely/Barely + aux + S + V ... when/before ...

• "Hardly had the meeting started when the fire alarm went off."
• "Scarcely had she finished the presentation before questions began."

4. No sooner ... than ...

Cấu trúc: No sooner + had + S + V3 + than + S + V2

• "No sooner had the manager announced the policy than employees began to protest."

5. Not only ... but also ...

Cấu trúc: Not only + aux + S + V ... but (S) also + V

• "Not only does the software improve efficiency, but it also reduces costs."
• "Not only did she complete the project on time, but she also exceeded expectations."

6. Not until

Cấu trúc: Not until + thời gian/mệnh đề + aux + S + V

• "Not until the contract is signed will the work begin."
• "Not until last week did we discover the error."

7. Only + trạng từ/giới từ

Cấu trúc: Only + when/after/if/by + ... + aux + S + V

• "Only after reviewing all applications will the committee make a decision."
• "Only when the payment is received can we process the order."
• "Only by working together can employees achieve the target."
• "Only if all members agree will the proposal be approved."

8. Under no circumstances / In no way / On no account / At no time

Cấu trúc: Cụm phủ định + aux + S + V

• "Under no circumstances should employees share passwords."
• "In no way does the company endorse such practices."
• "At no time were customers informed of the change."

9. Little / Few

Cấu trúc: Little/Few + aux + S + V (Little/Few mang nghĩa phủ định "rất ít")

• "Little did we know that the project would take so long."
• "Little does the public realize the complexity of the issue."

Nhóm 2: Đảo ngữ điều kiện (không dùng if)

Trong văn phong formal (và TOEIC), câu điều kiện có thể bỏ if và đảo ngữ:

10. Should (Điều kiện loại 1)

• If the shipment arrives late → "Should the shipment arrive late, please contact us."
• If you need assistance → "Should you need assistance, do not hesitate to call."

11. Were (Điều kiện loại 2)

• If I were in charge → "Were I in charge, I would restructure the department."
• If it were not for → "Were it not for the generous donation, the project would have failed."

12. Had (Điều kiện loại 3)

• If we had known → "Had we known about the issue earlier, we would have taken action."
• If it had not been for → "Had it not been for the team's effort, the deadline would have been missed."

Đúng, đảo ngữ thuộc formal register — phù hợp với bối cảnh TOEIC (email công việc, báo cáo, thông báo). Trong giao tiếp hàng ngày, người ta thường dùng cấu trúc bình thường thay vì đảo ngữ. Đây là lý do TOEIC hay hỏi — vì TOEIC đánh giá năng lực tiếng Anh trong môi trường kinh doanh.
