Parallel Structure là gì?
Cấu trúc song song (Parallel Structure) là quy tắc yêu cầu các thành phần cùng chức năng trong câu phải có cùng dạng ngữ pháp. Trong TOEIC Part 5, đây là dạng câu hỏi xuất hiện ổn định 1-2 câu/đề.
Ví dụ:
- SAI: "The manager enjoys reading reports and to analyze data."
- ĐÚNG: "The manager enjoys reading reports and analyzing data."
Cả hai hành động đều là tân ngữ của "enjoys" → phải cùng dạng V-ing.
Quy tắc cốt lõi
1. Song song danh từ (Nouns)
Khi liệt kê danh từ, tất cả phải là danh từ (không xen lẫn V-ing hay mệnh đề):
- SAI: "The job requires experience, dedicated, and leadership skills."
- ĐÚNG: "The job requires experience, dedication, and leadership skills."
2. Song song động từ (Verbs)
Khi liệt kê hành động, tất cả phải cùng dạng động từ:
- SAI: "Employees should review the policy, signing the form, and submit it."
- ĐÚNG: "Employees should review the policy, sign the form, and submit it."
(Sau should → V-bare cho cả 3)
3. Song song tính từ (Adjectives)
- SAI: "The new software is efficient, reliable, and costs less."
- ĐÚNG: "The new software is efficient, reliable, and affordable."
4. Song song cụm giới từ (Prepositional Phrases)
- SAI: "The product is available in stores, online, and by ordering through the catalog."
- ĐÚNG: "The product is available in stores, online, and through the catalog."
5. Song song mệnh đề (Clauses)
- SAI: "The report shows that sales increased and a decline in expenses."
- ĐÚNG: "The report shows that sales increased and that expenses declined."

TOEIC đặc biệt hay hỏi cấu trúc song song với correlative conjunctions (cặp liên từ tương quan):

Quy tắc: Thành phần sau both và after and phải cùng dạng.
- ĐÚNG: "The seminar is both informative and engaging." (adj + adj)
- ĐÚNG: "The company both develops software and provides consulting." (V + V)
- SAI: "The company both develops software and consulting services."
either ... or ...
- ĐÚNG: "Employees may either attend the workshop or complete the online module." (V + V)

- ĐÚNG: "The proposal was neither approved nor rejected." (V3 + V3)

- Tìm "and/or/but": Xác định thành phần trước liên từ → thành phần sau phải cùng dạng

Câu hỏi thường gặp
Parallel Structure xuất hiện bao nhiêu câu trong TOEIC?
Trung bình 1-2 câu/đề trong Part 5 và có thể xuất hiện trong Part 6 (text completion). Tuy không nhiều, nhưng đây là dạng câu "chắc ăn" vì chỉ cần nhận biết pattern là chọn đúng ngay — không cần hiểu nghĩa cả câu.
Làm sao phân biệt Parallel Structure và Word Form?
Word Form hỏi "dạng từ nào phù hợp vị trí ngữ pháp" (sau the → noun, trước noun → adj). Parallel Structure hỏi "dạng từ nào giống với thành phần đã có" (A and B → cùng dạng). Nếu câu có liên từ + liệt kê → Parallel. Nếu chỉ có 1 chỗ trống đơn lẻ → Word Form.
Both...and có thể nối mệnh đề không?
Có, nhưng hiếm trong TOEIC. Thường both...and nối từ hoặc cụm từ, không nối mệnh đề dài. Ví dụ đúng: "Both the manager and the director attended." Ví dụ hiếm: "She both completed the report and submitted it on time."
